What’s the Slow Food Movement and it’s benefits
Have you heard about slow food movement? Do you know what this movement is about? In this article, we will tell you about this movement that has been spreading across the world, winning hearts and minds of Michelin three-stars chefs and big chains alike.
The name Slow Food came precisely in opposition to the concept of “Fast Food. The movement seeks a gastronomy that starts with the choice of ingredients and the way of production, that respects the environment and artisanal producers, until it reaches the table, where coexistence and celebration are fundamental.
The birth of the movement
In 1986, seeking to escape this hectic routine and poor quality of life, food activist Carlos Petrini, in the small town of Bra in northern Italy, created the Slow Food movement. Not only with the intention of increasing the pleasure of eating, but also the responsible food production and consumption.
Three years later, in 1989, the movement became an international non profit association. And today it has more than 100 thousand members, spread across 150 countries. For Slow Food, food must be good, clean and fair.
According to the American organization, there are now 80 registered branches across the country.
Slow Food movement’s health benefits
The practice brings numerous health benefits, as it reduces the consumption of preservatives, pesticides, dyes, flavorings, etc. Which can cause various diseases, including cancer.
This diet also helps control the intake of fats and sugars, reducing the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc.
Furthermore, Slow Food’s proposal is that these meals be shared not only with family, but also with friends. This coexistence would help to fight stress and anxiety, resulting in a better quality of life for everyone.
Benefits for the environment
As for the fair food standard, the Slow Food movement brings benefits to society as a whole, as the small producer and the producing communities now have a space in the market. In addition to respecting nature and local diversity. In general, these producers are marginalized in the market or exploited in the production chain by large producers.
